Excursions on Grand Lake, Colorado
Grand County is more than just enjoying the amazing views. You will have enough to do to fill a week or just a day trip from Denver. But don't worry you don't have to do it all the first time. Once you come we are sure you will be back.
Sightseeing and picnicing
As you cruise through the waters on Shadow Mountain Lake and Grand Lake, be sure to keep your eye out for wildlife. Boaters are often treated to the sights and sounds of ospreys fishing. It is spectacular to watch these fish hawks dive into the water, snatch their prey, and fly back into the air with a flopping fish. The Trail Ridge Marina staff will provide you with a map that will point out the locations of several osprey nesting areas. These basket-like nests, high atop the trees, are made entirely of sticks. Adult birds successfully raise 2 to 3 young a season. Because of the highly sensitive nature of these birds, it is essential never to disturb them.
There is a "no wake" speed limit on this section of Shadow Mountain Lake , which emphasizes the importance placed on the wildlife resources of the area. Be on the lookout for elk, deer, coyotes, badgers, marmots, and other wildlife. It is not uncommon to see deer and moose feeding along the edge of the lake.
The islands and shores of Shadow Mountain Lake are dotted with excellent picnicking areas. Be sure to arrive early, though, because prime locations fill up quickly. There are also public dock in the town of Grand Lake to stop and get lunch.
Fishing
Flyfishing, spincasting, and trolling from boats are all successful methods of catching fish on the lakes. The waters have earned a reputation for being terrific fishing grounds for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Mackinaw and Kokanee. You can purchase your fishing supplies from our marina shop.
