Fishing on Grand Lake, Colorado
Your fishing adventures begin at Trail Ridge Marina, where we start your day with a complimentary cup of freshly brewed coffee. Our staff will provide you with a custom map that points out the location of the best fishing holes on Shadow Mountain Lake and Grand Lake . Rental boats are fully equipped with life jackets. For your convenience, we sell bait and tackle.
Types of fish:
- Brown Trout: Introduced to Colorado in 1890, The brown's identifying marks are black spots, and reddish orange spots inside of light blue circles. State record: 30 lbs, 8 oz. at Roaring Judy Ponds (1988).
- Brook Trout: Native to Colorado , the "brookie" has a dark body with red and white spots within bluish circles. State Record: 7 lbs, 10 oz. at Upper Cataract Lake (1947).
- Rainbow Trout: Introduced to Colorado in the 1880s, the rainbow is identified by a reddish stripe running down the side of the fish and by black spots. State record: 19 lbs, 10 oz., at Morrow Point Reservoir (2003)
- Kokanee: These salmon, which feature bluish-green with silver sides, are some of the most abundant fish in the lake. State record: 6 lbs, 13 oz. at Spinney Mtn. Reservoir (1986).
- Mackinaw: (lake trout): These hearty fish, whose life can span 20 years, were introduced to Colorado in 1890. They have irregular white spots on their dark bodies, and prefer deep water. State record: 46 lbs, 14.6 oz., at Blue Mesa Reservoir (2003).
Don't forget:
When fishing in Colorado, apply plenty of sunscreen. At this altitude, the sun is especially strong. Also, be sure to pack insect repellent and a few bandages for hooked fingers and skinned knees.
