Excursions
Sightseeing and picnicking As you cruise through the waters on Shadow Mountain Lake and Grand Lake , be sure to keep your eye out for wildlife. Boaters are often treated to the sights and sounds of ospreys fishing. It is spectacular to watch these fish hawks dive into the water, snatch their prey, and fly back into the air with a flopping fish. The Trail Ridge Marina staff will provide you with a map that will point out the locations of several osprey nesting areas. These basket-like nests, high atop the trees, are made entirely of sticks. Adult birds successfully raise 2 to 3 young a season. Because of the highly sensitive nature of these birds, it is essential never to disturb them. There is a "no wake" speed limit on this section of Shadow Mountain Lake , which emphasizes the importance placed on the wildlife resources of the area. Be on the lookout for elk, deer, coyotes, badgers, marmots, and other wildlife. It is not uncommon to see deer and moose feeding along the edge of the lake. Both the island and shores of Shadow Mountain Lake and the shores of Grand Lake are dotted with excellent picnicking areas. Be sure to arrive early, though, because prime locations fill up quickly.
Fishing Flyfishing, spincasting, and trolling from boats are all successful methods of catching fish on the lakes. The waters have earned a reputation for being terrific fishing grounds for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Mackinaw and Kokanee. You can purchase your supplies and Colorado fishing license from our marina shop. For more information, click here . Boat trip to Grand Lake The picturesque town of Grand Lake is easily accessible from Trail Ridge Marina. Travel across Shadow Mountain Lake , through a narrow boating channel, and you'll find yourself on Grand Lake . On the northwest corner of the lake, you'll find the public docks. Once in town, visit an old-fashioned soda fountain, have a latte at a coffee house, or grab a bite to eat at one of the town's restaurants, cafes, or saloons.
